Jubiláte Deo, omnis terra, psalmum dícite nómini ejus: * date glóriam laudi ejus.

O be joyful in God, all ye lands, sing praises unto the honour of his Name; * make his praise to be glorious.

2  Dícite Deo: Quam terribília sunt ópera tua, Dómine! * in multitúdine virtútis tuæ mentiéntur tibi inimíci tui.

2  Say unto God, O how wonderful art thou in thy works, O Lord! * through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies be found liars unto thee.

3  Omnis terra adóret te, et psallat tibi: * psalmum dicat nómini tuo.

3  For all the world shall worship thee, * sing of thee, and praise thy Name.

4  Veníte, et vidéte ópera Dei: * terríbilis in consíliis super fílios hóminum.

14  I will offer unto thee fat burnt-sacrifices, with the incense of rams; * I will offer bullocks and goats.

15  O come hither, and hearken, all ye that fear God; * and I will tell you what he hath done for my soul.

16  I called unto him with my mouth, * and gave him praises with my tongue.

17  Iniquitátem si aspéxi in corde meo, * non exáudiet Dóminus.

17  If I incline unto wickedness with mine heart, * the Lord will not hear me.

18  But God hath heard me; * and considered the voice of my prayer.

Justum et rationábile, dilectíssimi, veræ pietátis obséquium est in diébus, qui divínæ misericórdiæ ópera protestántur, toto corde gaudére, et honorífice ea, quæ ad salútem nostram gesta sunt, celebráre, vocánte nos ad hanc devotiónem ipsa recurréntium témporum lege, quæ nobis post diem, in quo coætérnus Patri Fílius Dei natus ex Vírgine est, brevi intervállo Epiphaníæ íntulit festum, ex apparitióne Dómini consecrátum.

It is meet and right, dearly beloved, yea, it is the bounden duty of true godliness, to rejoice with full hearts upon those days which bear witness to the works of God’s mercy; and to celebrate with honour the things which have been wrought for our salvation. Hereto are we called by the seasons of the year which continually return, and notably by this present season. For only a short time hath passed since that day whereon the Co-Eternal Son of God was born of a Virgin, and now is come the Feast of the Epiphany, hallowed by his Manifestation as The Lord.

In quo fídei nostræ magnum præsídium providéntia divína constítuit: ut, dum solémni veneratióne recólitur adoráta in exórdiis suis Salvatóris infántia, per ipsa originália documénta probarétur veri hóminis in ipso orta natúra.  Hoc enim est quod justíficat ímpios, hoc est quod ex peccatóribus facit sanctos, si in uno eodémque Dómino nostro Jesu Christo et vera Déitas, et vera credátur humánitas: Déitas, qua ante ómnia sǽcula in forma Dei æquális est Patri: humánitas, qua novíssimis diébus in forma servi unítus est hómini.

In this same manifestation the good providence of God hath appointed a strong bulwark to our faith. For now, while in solemn worship we call to mind how the childhood of the Saviour was adored in its first infancy, we also are made to consider the historical evidence for the doctrine that Christ was born with very nature of man. For this is that which maketh the ungodly righteous, and sinners saints; to wit, the belief in the true Godhead and the true Manhood of the one and same our Lord Jesus Christ. Very Godhead, as touching which, he, being in the form of God, is equal to the Father from everlasting to everlasting; and very Manhood, wherein he, taking upon him the form of a servant, hath in these latter days been born Man.

℣.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Ad roborándam ergo hanc fidem, quæ contra omnes præmuniebátur erróres, ex magna gestum est divíni pietáte consílii ut gens in longínqua Orientális plagæ regióne consístens, quæ spectandórum síderum arte pollébat, signum nati púeri, qui supra omnem Israël esset regnatúrus, accíperet.  Nova étenim cláritas apud Magos stellæ illustrióris appáruit, et intuéntium ánimos ita admiratióne sui splendóris implévit, ut nequáquam sibi créderent negligéndum, quod tanto nuntiabátur indício.

For the strengthening of this our Faith, which we profess in the face of every false doctrine, the mercy of God hath made it come to pass that one of those peoples who dwell in the uttermost parts of the East, and excel in the skill of reading the stars, should see the sign of the birth of that Child who was to reign over all Israel. There appeared to the eyes of the Wise Men a new star of such surpassing beauty, as wrought in their minds, whilst they gazed thereon, such wonderment, that they could not do other than take it as an announcement of an event too important to be neglected.

℣.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Virgin would not have seemed to them in any way remarkable in herself; the house was not a place of splendour; nor was there anything therein to awe or constrain them. Yet they not only fell down and worshipped, but also opened their treasures and presented gifts. And these gifts, verily, were not such as befit a man, but were a fit offering for God. For both frankincense and myrrh were specially wont to be used as a symbol of honour paid to God. What then constrained them? The same which wrought upon them to set out from home, and come on so long a journey; and this same was not only the star, but the enlightenment worked by God in their minds, whereby little by little they were guided into more perfect knowledge.

Yea, it must have been so. For all that they beheld was mean in appearance, and would not have provoked them to offer such great honours. None of the outward circumstances of the Saviour’s birth betokened greatness; neither the manger, nor the lowly dwelling, nor a mother of poor estate. These considerations do set before thy mind’s eye the simplicity of the Magi’s wisdom, wherefrom thou canst perceive that they approached him, not as mere man, but as God who is himself the giver of all good things. It was for this reason that they were not to be misled by what they saw outwardly, but rather, they fell down and worshipped; they offered gifts, which same were not after the order of the externalities of the Jewry. For they sacrificed not sheep and calves, but rather they did offer according to spiritual understanding, namely, their science, their obedience, and their love.

Neither were they troubled; nor do they perplex themselves, saying: And yet, if this young Child be great, and hath any might, what need have we of flight, or of stealthy retreat? and how can it be, since we came openly and with confidence, among so great a people, and have withstood the king’s madness, that the Angel must needs send us out of the city as runaways? Not one of these things did they say or think. And such docile obedience cometh from faith, that is, not to seek the reason of the commandments, but rather to obey them.
