The Chaplet of the Holy Face

The Holy Face Chaplet W/ Prayer and Instruction 39 Beads image 2

The Chaplet of the Holy Face is a chaplet of reparation for sins, a prayer to honor the Five Wounds of our Lord Jesus Christ and to ask of God the triumph of his Holy Church.  It is composed of a cross, 39 beads (6 large and 33 small), and a medal of the Holy Face.

The Cross calls to mind the mystery of our Redemption.  The 33 small beads represent the 33 years of the mortal life of our Lord.

Five large beads preceed each of the five sets of small beads, and dedicate that section of the Chaplet to our Lord's senses of TOUCH, HEARING, SIGHT, SMELL, and TASTE, which, as they were situated principally in his holy face, are intended to render reparative homage for all the sufferings which our Lord endured in his Face through each of these senses.  A sixth large bead follows the final set of small beads.

The five sets of six small beads make up a total of thirty, and recall to us the thirty years of our Lord's hidden life.  The last three beads mark the three years of the public life of our Lord, and have for their intention to honor all the wounds of his sacred Face.

The Glor be is recited a total of seven times in honor of the seven last words of Jesus upon the cross, and the Seven Sorrows of our Lady of Sorrows.

St. Athanasius said that more than any other verse in Scripture the devils hate the words “Arise, O Lord, and let thine enemies be scattered, and let all that hate thee flee before thy Holy Face."   He added that this verse of the psalms always compel them to take flight!

How to Pray the Chaplet

1. Make the sign of the Cross and say:

V.  O God, make speed to save us.
     R.  O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

2. On the first of the large beads, pray the following in honor of our blessed Lord's sense of TOUCH:

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me a sinner.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

3. On each of the six beads that follow, say the following prayer:

Arise, O Lord, and let thine enemies be scattered, and let all that hate thee flee before thy Holy Face.

4. On the first of the large beads, pray the following in honor of our blessed Lord's sense of HEARING:
